Dear Mr Macdonnell,

Thank you for your letter of 26 March 2013 entitled "Bannockburn 2014: 'Lor=
d of the Isles, My Trust in Thee". Specifically, I am writing to reassure =
you that the prominent part which Angus Og MacDonald took at the Battle of =
Bannockburn will be given the appropriate relative emphasis in the new perm=
anent interpretation.

The Project Team is working very closely with the Academic Advisory Panel -=
a group of acknowledged experts on Bannockburn - to ensure that the new in=
terpretation is in fact strong and academically sound, based on acceptable =
and authoritative research and to ensure proper historic balance of promine=
nce in the interpretation.

The Academic Panel and the NTS share your view of the significant part whic=
h Angus Og took in the battle, and which is articulated in the quotes from =
Clan Donald Vol.1, GWS Barrow, and the RCAHMS, which you included in your l=
etter.

Permanent interpretation

The new interpretation focuses specifically on the events of the two days o=
f battle. We are not using traditional methods of interpretation, such as g=
raphic panels. Instead, there will be a predominance of highly innovative a=
nd creative audio visual media, which we will use to create an engaging and=
immersive experience of the events of 23 and 24 June 1314 and their main p=
rotagonists.

I can give you the following specific examples of how Angus Og will be incl=
uded in the permanent interpretation:

 1. One key highlight of the permanent exhibition is a series of ten large=
scale "character screens", where visitors hear stories and gather informat=
ion relating to the battle. In response to the advice of the Academic Advis=
ory Panel, one of the characters will be a clansman fighting for Angus Og. =
He explains the circumstances of Clan Donald's control over significant fie=
fdoms including Islay, and the nature of King Robert's supportive relations=
hip with Clan Donald.

 1. A visit to the Bannockburn centre culminates in an exciting and innova=
tive multi-user, multi-media inter-active experience. Here, all visitors wi=
ll have the opportunity to take part in a battle, and find out of what happ=
ened over the two days in 1314. This experience will prominently feature an=
d visualise Angus Og MacDonald's army.

 1. The centre will showcase stunning visualizations of battle, the purpos=
e of which is to illustrate the mechanics of medieval warfare, and in which=
various heraldic insignia will be visible. The heraldry of Angus Og MacDon=
ald was included, along with the heraldry of a small selection of other Sco=
ttish knights, in the package of information submitted for the production o=
f the media, which is currently in progress.

 1. The nine granite bollards separating the visitor car park from the for=
ecourt in front of the main entrance will each feature a bronze plaque engr=
aved with the name of a Scottish knight associated with Bannockburn. Aongha=
s =D3g MacDomhnaill is included in this scheme.

I can assure you that, within the context of the whole visitor experience, =
the above examples will constitute an appropriate degree of prominence, giv=
en their undoubted significance to the battle.

The Battle of Bannockburn Re-enactment 28-30 June 2014

There will be a number of exciting events commemorating the 700th Anniversa=
ry of the Battle of Bannockburn during the Year of Homecoming 2014, includi=
ng an exciting battle re-enactment event, scheduled to take place from 28-3=
0 June 2014.

The re-enactment will be the largest ever hosted at the memorial battlefiel=
d and the Trust anticipates it will also feature costumed characters throug=
hout the site, weaponry displays, a medieval village, traditional food and =
drink.

Amongst the many activities onsite, clans will be represented. The full det=
ails are being finalised at the moment.

Yours sincerely,
